Loerie Awards (2011)

Makeka Design Lab is proud to be acknowledged by the premier brand communication awards in the Africa & The Middle East, The Loerie Awards. Our design for the South African Police Service Railway Police Station in Retreat is the inaugural recipient of the Gold Loerie Award for Three Dimensional & Environmental Design-Architecture. We are delighted to have been nominated along with socially significant buildings like The Fugard Theatre and The Lebone II College and are honoured to have been awarded the Gold Award.

We would like to thank the Loerie Award committee for acknowledging the impact and significance that Architecture has in brand communication by creating this category and finding SAPS Retreat as a worthy winner.

We would also like to thank The South African Police Service for supporting our vision and design for a police station that enhances and upholds civic pride and civic ownership.

We would also like to thank everyone who has supported and continues to support Makeka Design Lab and our passion for architecture that is just, beautiful, and socially responsive.

SAPS Retreat Railway Police Station – The People Police Station

The Retreat Railway Station hold steadfast to the humanist ideal and manages to realize a positive outcome. It acknowledges that a better public engagement can be fostered by fashioning spaces and environments that promote transparency and visibility, that are open and welcoming, and most importantly are safe and accessible. The building does plays its part in the narrative of a better, more efficient and more connected South African Police Service to be used and accessed by the citizens it serves.
