Rock Girl Bench

South Africa has one of the highest incidences of rape and sexual violence in the world.  Rock Girl initiated the "Safe Spaces", a grassroots public art and education campaign, to motivate for and create safe places for girls and women - and everyone - in our schools, communities, and CBDs - everywhere we live, work, study, and play.  Rock Girl is uniting with artists and designers to create symbolic one-of-a-kind public benches to inspire the creation actual safe spaces.

Each bench located in an urban area will have a sister bench in a previously disadvantaged community, school, community centre, or other public space.  The campaign was inspired by a group of Grade 6 learners from Manenberg who took action and created a safe space at their own school.

The benches located in Station Square are part of a temporary group exhibition.  One of the benches, designed by Mokena Makeka and sponsored by Cape Town Partnership/CCID, will remain at the Station permanently.  The rest of the benches will be moved to sites around the city in early 2012.   Check out the map to find more Safe Spaces benches around your city.

Rock Girl is proud to be part of the World Design Capital.  Look for other Rock Girl initiatives around Cape Town in 2012.
